The paradox that is Everton emerged once more with a performance that belied the pathetic damp squib against Reading. With Neville pushed into midfield, Beckford managing to arrive on time, Hibbo at right back and Mikel Arteta pushed wide left it looked like a patched up formation.
It has been 10 years since we last won at Newcastle and a bright start suggested that statistic might be ended. It was a bit of a surprise, though, that Everton conceded, sloppy goal from poor defending. Two goals in 5 minutes turned things completely around, Osman netting after he had been heavily involved in the build up and Jags at the back post after a peach of a free kick from Baines.
The main talking point, apart from the marine life in the Centurian Bar (can't explain here!) was Arteta's perfomance. Playing out wide, coming inside when necessary, he gave a strong, polished and man of the match performance. It was Mikel as we know him and it will be interesting to see if he stays in this position against Birmingham on Wednesday.
Inevitably the calculators came out post-match and the 'E' word was used once more. But Everton being the way they are, our so called run of easy games could be anything but. Still, a couple of wins, good luck, results elsewhere etc etc............no, too much to do. Possibly!
